Why you should remove your dog

While a dog collar is essential for keeping your pup safe in the outside world, when you return to the comfort of your own home it's safer to remove your pet's collar.

The Royal Vista Vets, a veterinary clinic in Colorado, has released a statement warning pet owners that dog collars can be a strangulation hazard at home as they can easily catch on furniture and send dogs into a panic.

The Daily Mail reports that the statement was released after a 14-month-old Golden Retriever got his collar stuck while playing. He panicked and tried to get free, by twisted himself in way that his collar tighten around his neck.

Percy is now said to be on the road to recovery, after a stay in the vet's intensive care unit where he received oxygen and pain medication. However, the outcome could have been different had Percy's owners not been there to intervene when his collar became twisted.

A spokesperson for the Royal Vista Vets told the Daily Mail: "The strangulation hazard of dogs playing while wearing collars is a hidden danger that many pet owners don’t know about, but a story we hear with some frequency in our emergency clinics."

The vets advise owners to always remove their dog's collar after walks, and never leave their pet unsupervised when wearing a collar.
