Lenzing Repositions Sustainable Matte Tencel for Men’s Fashion Market – Sourcing Journal

Denim fabrics with authentic constructions and heavy weights are part of Lenzing’s new collection positioned for the men’s and unisex markets.

This week at Kingpins Amsterdam, the lyocell producer will present the Matte Tencel Denim Capsule Collection, a line of garments made with fabrics from 13 mill partners using the company’s low-luster Tencel lyocell fibers. The fabrics are made with a minimum of 40 percent matte Tencel, delivering fabrics with high heft, higher opaqueness and less sheen, said Tuncay Kilickan, Lenzing’s head of global business development, denim. Launched in 2021, matte Tencel is specially designed to scatter light and permanently diminish sheen in denim applications. The fiber was engineered to offer fabric manufacturers the same sustainable and performance benefits as regular Tencel but with greater design versatility.

The first applications yielded lightweight fabrics for the women’s denim market. “However, by continuing our R&D, we were able to go a step further, now also capturing the men’s wear segment where shine as a feature is even less sought out,” Kilickan added.

The Matte Tencel Denim Capsule Collection spotlights fabrics that have the cotton-like appearance like authentic denim fabric, while retaining Tencel’s soft and luxurious properties, said Sabur Iftikhar Qureshi, general manager marketing of Artistic Fabric Mills, one of the mills that participated in the collection.

The other mills that contributed to the collection are Advance Denim, AGI Denim, Azgard9, Beximco, Bhaskar Denim, Crescent Bahuman, Indigo, Kassim, LNJ Denim, NDL, Panther Denim, SM Denim Mills and US Denim Mills. The innovation allows mills to leverage matte Tencel’s sustainable benefits in the men’s and unisex categories.

The fiber’s closed-loop production process helps mills reduce waste. Plus, the fibers are highly receptive to various dyes and finishes, according to Arsal Kassim, Kassim Denim’s creative director. “They can be efficiently dyed, allowing [us] to achieve all kinds of desired colors or shades while also reducing production time and resource consumption,” he said.

“Material innovation is at the heart of the denim business,” said Junaid Safdar, Beximco chief operating officer. “Our work with the Tencel team embodies this, and showcases the possibilities of design, fabric application and circularity at every turn.”
