The youngsters earned a coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag after collaborating with staff to conduct an "environmental review" of the school's recycling practices, energy use and curriculum to see how well environmental issues are covered in classes.

A spokesperson for the school said it has now planned a year of activities to make it more environmentally-friendly off the back of the pupils' findings.

The spokesperson added: "The group connected their work to three eco-schools topics: water, energy and global citizenship activities, which included installing water butts, creating energy monitors in each classroom and hosting a fair trade bake sale."

Eco-Schools England manager Adam Flint added: “Earning an Eco-Schools Green Flag award takes passion, commitment and a desire to make a difference.
