WASHINGTON – From the beginning of the year through the end of February, U.S. imports of hardwood plywood have declined by 66% in volume and 68% in value compared with the same period last year. Imports from most countries are down, except Canada and Ecuador, according to the Decorative Hardwoods Assn.

Hardwood plywood imports grew in 2022, though slowed drastically in the year’s second half. In the first half of the year, imports soared by 77% in value and 37% in volume. In the second half, imports tanked, and the year ended up with just a 12% value growth. Imports from Russia, largely due to the Russian-Ukraine conflict, fell by 34% in volume.

Engineered wood flooring imports are also down so far this year, declining by 28% in value from last year. Volume is down from all countries except for Vietnam.

Washington has noticed and recently announced a $34 million investment to strengthen the wood products economy. That money will go toward strengthening forests and adding jobs.

“Healthy forests depend on a healthy forest products industry, and as the nation faces an ongoing wildfire crisis, it is more important than ever to invest in sustainable forest management across all lands,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “These investments will reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires, support existing jobs and create new economic opportunities in tribal and economically disadvantaged communities.”

Canada is also investing in its forests. In early April, the federal government announced it would commit $368 million to the sector over the next three years. The money will go toward a “wide range of forestry initiatives,” including strengthening rural communities, forestry research and sustainably sourced forest products.
